Self-Care is Also…..
We’ve been hearing so much about self-care this last while, haven’t we? Thankfully. And, I feel, finally!
I have been a long-standing proponent of self-care, encouraging people to engage in practices AND working to change the preconceived notions many people have about self-care, that prevents them from jumping on board.
The practices? Well, there are many, and honestly, an unlimited pool of options as it is about whatever works for the individual person.
The Seven Pillars I use with my clients (and my own self-care!) are:
-Movement and Exercise
-Hydration
-Nutrition
-Fun and Joy
-Stillness
-Gratitude
-Time in Nature
Now, even more important I feel, are some of the “other” things that part of our self-care practices.
To explore these, consider the idea of a battery. And a rechargeable one of course. I often speak to clients (and myself) about an emotional battery. That is, there is only so much energy I can give others before I need to recharge myself.
With the battery idea in mind, yes, the above list is really helpful to replenish, BUT what about looking through a preventative lens? What about being more mindful of the things that drain our emotional battery?
Imagine the strength of your wellness if you paired together measures that prevent some unnecessary battery depletion WITH the above self-care practices.
What might be some “preventative self-care practices”?
1) Letting go of the attempts to “be perfect”. No one, and nothing is perfect.
2) Ensuring that your voice is the one driving the bus of your life’s journey.
3) Saying no to the things that don’t serve you and your mission to serve others.
These preventative practices are hard for many of us, I agree (and have experienced these myself).
If these practices are something you struggle with, I invite you to subscribe to this blog (if you haven’t already!) as more articles are to come about tools and strategies to assist you.
And, please consider joining me in my upcoming Spring Webinar series that will explore each of these more deeply.
These are low-cost webinars, only $10 per session, with $5 being donated to The Tree of Stars, a local organization dedicated to increasing awareness of mental health issues and supporting addiction recovery.
Please feel free to connect if I can support you in your self-care journey. More to come friends.
