Fresh Fridays kick-off with: CONSISTENCY!
Kicking things off this week with the ONE thing that makes a difference to ANY goal.
Okay, okay, I know there are certainly many things that can impact goal attainment. BUT THIS is the thing I see that many folks are missing.
That thing is CONSISTENCY.
Time and again, I listen to business owners, people with fitness targets, and students talk about the goals they are working on. Often, they are sharing with me, frustration with their lack of progress (that's why they've reached out to a coach to begin with).
So, coaching question one, "what have you been doing so far, and how often have you been doing that?" The answer to part one of the question is often a great list of effective strategies, while the answer to part two of the question, sounds like "well, I started daily and then a kid was sick and then Christmas".... etc. I get it. Totally. Life gets in the way.
BUT.
Life will ALWAYS get in the way and if we wait until a time that will allow consistency in our efforts, we will never take consistent action.
It makes complete sense. I see it regularly. When I post and engage regularly on social media, my engagement goes up. When I don't, engagement drops. When we do something consistently, we get a more consistent return on our efforts.
One might ask (and it is a great question), "how the heck do I know what the 'thing' is to do consistently"? Again, great question. Review the strategies you know have worked for you, or someone else. Pick one and try it. Many people hold back on doing anything because they don't know what the "right" thing is. Well, guess what? Successful folks didn't know before they got it right either! Do your homework to be able to make the most educated guess at what will work, and then DO IT! CONSISTENTLY. And see what happens!
Still don't believe me?
Let me ask you if you were prescribed a medication, say a blood pressure medication, and you only took it "now and then" rather than daily, would you expect the medication to work properly? Would you get the expected return on investment, in this case, the lowering of your blood pressure in return for you taking the medication as directed?
I wouldn't.
If you only brushed your teeth "now and then" instead of 2-3 times a day as dentists recommend, would you expect to be cavity and gum disease-free?
I wouldn't.
These two examples tend to have most folks seeing the value of consistent effort. BUT, take that into the fitness space, or the entrepreneurial/business-building space, and it seems all bets are off sometimes.
Why? Because, in my opinion (based on 25+ years of experience working with people, as well as education and training) there is no quick payoff to our efforts, and therefore we get discouraged quickly and stop trying.
To be successful in building business, or improving your fitness level, IT TAKES TIME. We are asking for a big change here. A change in our fitness or business growth takes CONSISTENT hard work over the long haul.
What about you? Are you going after your goals consistently? No? That's ok. Things have been tough. And, remember, you're in charge of the story you're telling yourself. If, running through your mind is "I don't have time to move my body every day", or "I don't have time to post on social media for my business every day".....guess what?
You won't.
Get after it friends. You can do it!
