Don’t forget, it works both ways
Have you used the phrase “this too shall pass” to help ground yourself when things are challenging? I know I have. And it has proven very helpful.
Now, have you considered the flip side? That this idea works the other way too? The “good stuff” will also pass. The fact is, for some reason, when things are going poorly, we can recognize them as temporary, BUT when things are going well, we expect them to last forever. And then when things stop going well, it can create upset, chaos, and overwhelm.
I invite you to consider reflecting on “this too shall pass” when you’re in a great moment as well. Not because I want to be an “Eeyore” and only see the negative side. Quite the opposite. I encourage you to think about how you’ll process the highs and the lows to help stay grounded either way. How you’ll help yourself through the negative times, knowing they are temporary AND how you’ll also know the good times are temporary, THEREFORE you’ll learn to relish these! Really immerse yourself in this positive moment. Remembering what it feels like, sounds like, maybe smells like.
I will leave you with a quote from a “famous” hockey coach I know….and live with, my husband. One of his sayings that has served him well through his hockey career, and coaching our kids is, “never get too high, never get too low”. That is, when you’ve just scored, that’s great-give your teammates a humble high-five, and then go line up for the next face-off. There is still work to do. And when your team is losing, no worries. There’s always the third period, a lesson to learn, or something funny to laugh at on the bench (and FYI, my husband is usually the funny thing to laugh at on the bench).
All of these things are temporary, so let’s remind ourselves to stay grounded, move through the hard stuff, fully relish the good stuff, and best support our wellness. Tomorrow is a new day to be awesome.
Stay well friends,
Deanna
