Self-acceptance

Self-acceptance, the ability to accept all of one’s attributes, positive and negative, is key to our wellness and personal development.

If this is something with which you struggle, I invite you to reflect on the following:

>> What are all of the positive attributes that you like about yourself? If your answer is currently “nothing”, ask a trusted friend or family member what they like and why. It just might spark some thoughts

>> What are all of the negatives you identify, and perhaps stew over?

>> *THIS IS A BIG ONE TO MOVE TOWARDS ACCEPTANCE: the things that you consider to be a negative attribute, reflect on why that is so. Where did that story come from? Did someone in your life tell you you are “too much”, your nose is too big, or whatever the case may be? Consider that most of what we believe and tell ourselves, comes from someone else. Spend some time here. You just may begin to see that those attributes you consider to be negative, are some of the things that make you uniquely you, and it only matters what you think and feel.

>> I will also invite you to consider a mantra if, what you consider to be a negative attribute that you’d like to work on, rears its head. Let’s say you are a person who chronically runs late, and that is something you’d like to change. You’re working on it, but you’re late to brunch with family one day because you misread directions. Here is your mantra (that’s useful for all other situations too): “I am doing the best I can with the skills, tools, and abilities I currently have.”

I know that reflecting on yourself can be uncomfortable, BUT if you’re working on personal development, your health, or wellness, you’ve got to move toward accepting all of yourself.

We will be talking more about self-acceptance and how it impacts our acceptance of others today at 12 p.m.EST during “Lunch with a Life Coach”.
